• An expanding universe of light and bees

    Berlin 2025 — Documentary
This documentary follows the development of recent works and exhibitions undertaken in Berlin throughout 2025.

Moving between studio fragments, installation processes and the shifting atmosphere of the city, the film observes painting as a slow and accumulative act — one shaped through attention, repetition and extended duration.

The project reflects an ongoing investigation into perception, memory, materiality and the quiet agency of objects and surfaces within contemporary life.

Supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSCI), Western Australia.

An Expanding Universe of Light and Bees by Adam Derums is a contemplative body of work that weaves together the celestial and the earthly, abstraction and learning, offering a sensory antidote to the disembodiment of digital life. Through a slow, intuitive painting process, Derums explores the evolution of perception—from the infant’s first encounter with light and dark to the adult’s search for meaning in a fractured world. Luminous forms emerge from layered darkness, echoing the cosmos while remaining grounded in the physical. These works invite meditative engagement, evoking the quiet complexity of knowledge formed through patient observation and communal exchange. Amidst political uncertainty and digital overload, Derums’ paintings offer moments of stillness, asking us to reconnect with our bodies, each other, and the mysteries that lie just beyond knowing.
